Κάποιες ελληνικής προέλευσης λέξεις που χρησιμοποιούνται στα αγγλικά (και όχι μόνο), έχουν διαφορετικό νόημα στη χρήση τους στη γλώσσα αυτή απ' ότι στην μητρική τους (Αρχαία Ελληνικά), τουλάχιστον όπως αυτή ομιλείτε σήμερα (Νέα Ελληνικά). Θα παρουσιάσω κάποιες από αυτές τις λέξεις, με τη βοήθεια στίχων από δημοφιλή ξένα τραγούδια, τα οποία έχουν ερμηνευθεί στα αγγλικά.
Some words of Hellenic (Greek) origin, that are being used in the English language (and other languages as well), have a different meaning or use in these languages than they do in their mother language (Ancient Hellenic), at least as it is been used at the present (Neo-Hellenic). Ι will present some of these words with the help of popular songs and their lyrics.
απολογία /apoloyia (the speech of the accused)
apology (I apologize: ζητώ συγγνώμη)
Song: I'm Sorry-BRENDA LEE (1960 / please accept my apology)
ατομικό / atomico (usually refers to: anything that belongs to someone / personal belongings)
atomic (refers to a. energy / αυτό(ς) που έχει ατομική ενέργεια)
Notice: It usually refers to someone or something full of energy
Song: Atomic-BLONDIE (1980)
διδάκτωρ / thithactor (he who teaches /also: he who has a master degree after his bachelor)
doctor (συνήθως: ο γιατρός /usually: the physician)
Notice: in Neo-Hellenic the physician is he who teaches Physics at Highschools
εθνικός / ethnicos (national / of the same national or racial community)
ethnic (international / of different national cultures / occasionally: traditional)
The term usually refers to "world music" with specific cultural elements.

Endymion (personification of the sunset / προσωποποίηση της Δύσης του Ήλιου> ηλιοβασίλεμα, δειλινό, σούρουπο)

Notice: Hellenic people would consider it an insult to use this term to describe a cinema)

catholic (καθολικό-ς), orthodox (ορθόδοξο-ς): referring to religion terms in English & in logic terms in Hellenic.
Education:
sophomore (second year university student, who thinks he knows everything but actually knows shit)
Though both parts of the word come from the Ancient Hellenic (sophos: wise, moros: moron), such a Hellenic word doesn't excist
